Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.
Winston S. Churchill
This is just one of many conceited quotes from Winston Churchill, but I’ve always thought this one was pretty cute. Then I read this article in The Independent: British public wrong about nearly everything, survey shows.
How are we supposed to have a representative government when the average population is so misinformed?
Who’s to blame?
Well, the right gains by demonising the poorest and most vulnerable in society, creating a culture ripe for divide and conquer. I mean, just listen to the rhetoric from the Tories about “hard working families” being undermined by welfare scroungers. It turns out welfare fraud is a small fraction of the popular conception.
The media, apparent strangers to the concept of impartiality, reports this prejudice like it’s balanced reporting.
Then the public lap it up because they have no critical acumen about what’s fed to them in the media.
It’s all a bit depressing really.
We really need to come up with something better than democracy because our democracy just isn’t working.
